Cultural visit to the High Atlas (full day)

Departure from the riad at: 08:45

Get off the beaten track and come with us into the very heart of the High Altas Moutains. We will take you up a remote valley with spectacular scenery and join a community of montain village women from the Amazigh (Berber) tribe.

This day trip will after a behind-the-scenes access to where and how the Siroua wool we use to weave our rugs is hand washed and spun using ancestral techniques. Our manyyears of working with this tribal community opens the doorto an intimate and unique insight into their local culture and way of life, normally inaccessible to outsiders, we begin the day by travelling in a private vehicle up into the High Atlas Mountains, a range of towering peaks and villages perched precariously on mountainsides.

We will be met by our community of village women at the banks of the river who will have tea prepared for us before joining them in the process of washing the raw Siroua wool by hand.

Applying age old techniques of batting the fibre to excrete the rich, soapy lanolin within it’s fibers. this process avoids entirely the use of chemical detergents leaving the fleece beautifully clean. we then head further up the valley to the women’s village where a delicious Moroccan lunch will be served in a traditional Amazigh mountain home in the afternoon we will take a short walk to another home where the local women will teach you how to card and spin the fleece using a drop spindle.

The day is wrapped up with another warm Moroccan tea before heading back home.
